That didn’t, however, overtake my love for storytelling.

Each student was tasked to create an original one-page comic based off a list of pre-approved titles. I chose “The Jump.” This was after brainstorming and sketching comic pages and even full-page comic strips with titles such as, “The Sting,” “The Fall,” and “The Call.” All of those stories, while fun or emotional, were not strong enough as far as storytelling and concept, which is why they were left in the “stories for another time” folder.

This story goes as followed: Senior Agent Tulip and Junior Agent Poppy are tasked with apprehending R. Shaw, a mad scientist who has been a thorn in the side to The Agency. But as seen in the comic, bringing Shaw to justice is never an easy feat.

The names of the characters are based on BBC’s The Avengers 5×16 “Who’s Who???” episode where criminals are killing agents with flower-based code names. (I, sadly, didn’t have the panel space to reference the mind-swapping part of the plot.)
The name of our villain was taken from various TV shows and movies where there is almost always a character named Shaw. (And if you look closely, you can see our antagonist in the upper-right corner of the title panel.)

The inking was done traditional on oversized paper and scanned in two pieces. The panel borders were redrawn digitally, and any odd artifacts were also corrected in Adobe Photoshop. The explosion was also drawn digitally as I needed it to be layered in a way that was harder to achieve with traditional materials.

Excluding black and white (paper), only two colors were allowed for this assignment. I went to my handy-dandy Sanzo Wada’s Color Combination Vol. I, and found the perfect ones for this projects, as I needed colors that were “guaranteed” to look good when printed.

This is still one of my all-time favorite pieces.
